Postgraduate Program of School of French

The School of French at AUTh is one of the two main national institutions that provide initial training to French language teachers working in schools belonging to the public and private sector, and in foreign language centres all over Greece.

Through the postgraduate study programs focusing on specialized subjects and doctoral research which are developed by its three Departments, the School trains highly-qualified scientists who are employed by the country’s educational establishments, and by other institutes in the public and private sector.

The Postgraduate Study Program offers the following three specializations:

  • Language Teaching and New Technologies in Language Communication
  • Translation of Literature and Human Sciences

Object of the program

The object of the P.S.P. is to promote research in the scientific fields of Literature, Language and Translation – Translation Studies, and train well-qualified specialized scientific personnel that will be able to cover existing and foreseeable social and developmental requirements.

Aims of the programme

•    The study of literature as a means of languages/cultures 'preservation.
•    Research into new teaching approaches towards foreign languages/cultures and the training of specialist scientists in the field of Linguistics.
•    Training of literary and humanities translators and the development of scientific thought and research in the fields of Translation Studies .
•    Training graduates of the Schools of Philosophy and teachers in Primary and Secondary Education in modern theories, methods and tools for teaching languages/cultures, literary texts and translation in practice.
•    Promotion and application of new technologies in language education and in research focusing on humanitarian sciences.
•    Introduction of the intercultural dimension in educational practice, associated to the principle of linguistic/cultural diversity in Europe.

Postgraduate titles

The P.S.P. offers:

1. Postgraduate Specialisation Diploma (P.S.D.) in

•    French Literature and Interculturalism
•    Language Didactics and New Technologies in Language Communication
•    Translation Studies-Literary and Humanities Translation

2. Doctoral Diploma (D.D.) in the above scientific fields.

Categories of Graduates

The Postgraduate Study Programme is open to:

  1. for a P.S.D.:  graduates of all HE departments in Greece or of other equivalent foreign institutions, as well as graduates of Technological Educational Institutes, according to the criteria set by the Department’s General Assembly and the relevant provisions.
  2. for a D.D.: holders of the above P.S.D. or a P.S.D. on a related subject.

Duration

The duration of studies in order to obtain a postgraduate study title, according to article 3,  is defined as being a minimum of four (4) academic semesters  or a maximum of  eight (8) for a P.S.D. When eight (8) semesters have elapsed since the registration date, students who have not obtained a P.S.D. are not allowed to continue on the P.S.P.

The duration of studies for the D.D. is defined as being a minimum of six (6) semesters after the acquisition of the P.S.D. or a maximum of twelve (12) semesters. When twelve (12) semesters have elapsed since the registration date, students who have not submitted their thesis, approved by the 3-member Advisory Committee, to the Secretariat of the School of French, are not allowed to continue on the P.S.P. A deferment of studies can be granted for substantial reasons that will be evaluated by the School’s General Assembly.

Joint Postgraduate Studies program (J.P.P.S.) "Languages, Communication and Management of Education Services in the modern social, economic and technological environment"

The Joint Postgraduate Studies program (J.P.P.S.) “Languages, Communication and Management of Education Services in the modern social, economic and technological environment” was introduced in 2019 and is run by the Schools of French Language and Literature, the School of Philosophy and Education, the School of Economics and the School of German Language and Literature, of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Postgraduate titles

The P.S.P. offers Postgraduate Diploma (P.S.D.) in two specializations:

  • Language Teaching and Educational Technologies in Multilingual and Multicultural Environments.

  • Management of Education Services in Multilingual and Multicultural Environments.

The languages supported by the Program are Greek, English, French.

Joint Postgraduate Studies programme (J.P.P.S.) “Conference Interpreting and Translation”

The Joint Postgraduate Studies programme (J.P.P.S.) “Conference Interpreting and Translation” was introduced in 2003 and is run by the Schools of English Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, German Language and Literature and Italian Language and Literature and School of Political Sciences of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The aim of the programme is to train interpreters and translators of modern languages to a fully professional standard and to develop knowledge and research in the field of Translation Studies.

Since 2014, the translation course is awarded the "European Master’s in Translation" (EMT) quality label.

Two courses are offered: a. Conference Interpreting or Liaison Interpreting, and b. Translation –Translation Studies. The programme is funded by the Greek state; the course in interpreting is partly financed by the Directorate General for Interpretation of the European Commission (SCIC). The programme offers the following degrees: a. Interpreting and b. Translation – Translation Studies.

Master’s degree Title

The Joint Postgraduate Studies Program offers a master’s degree (Postgraduate Specialisation Diploma) in Semiotics, Culture and Communication.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of the Joint Postgraduate Studies Program in Semiotics, Culture and Communication is:

  • to investigate of phenomena of modern culture, at a theoretical and an applied level, from literature, advertising, audiovisual media, art, cultural heritage, to language, ideology, education, digital culture, popular culture and cultural adaptation,
  • to highlight the analytical and interpretive possibilities of semiotics in the study of culture in all its diversity, complexity and dynamism,
  • to respond to the needs of the market in the field of communication and culture.

The 1,5-year program of study offers a mix of mandatory and optional courses that involve:

  • The study of communication and media.
  • The study of ideology, cultural and social identities.
  • The search for meaning in different types and tropes of text (literary, political, visual, audiovisual, advertising, artistic) and media (oral, typographic, photographic, filmic, digital)
  • Research in modern communication techniques and strategies.
  • Creating awareness about intercultural communication in educational practice.
  • Discussing the theoretical and practical aspects of multimodality, intercultural translation, cultural adaptation and audiovisual communication.
  • Understanding the position of Semiotics within the Human and Social Sciences.
  • Understanding Semiotics as an interdisciplinary field.
  • Understanding different models of semiotic analysis of cultural practices.

Requirements and duration

The requirements of the Joint Postgraduate Studies Program in Semiotics, Culture and Communication follow the highest international academic standards. They are fulfilled when students:

  • fully attend two semesters of taught postgraduate courses and pass the semester exams with a written assignment in all units
  • submit a final Diploma Thesis and pass the final presentation exam.
    The duration of studies is a minimum of three (3) academic semesters or a maximum of six (6). The expected duration of studies is three (3) semesters, while half-time students can complete the course over 5 (five) to 6 (six) semesters.

The language of instruction is Greek. To obtain a master’s degree in Semiotics, Culture and Communication, postgraduate students must collect 90 (ninety) ECSTs divided into 8 courses and a Master’s Thesis (Diploma Thesis).

Evaluation

The program’s Quality Index according to our students’ evaluation is 89.85/100 (academic year 2019-20).
