Master’s degree Title
The Joint Postgraduate Studies Program offers a master’s degree (Postgraduate Specialisation Diploma) in Semiotics, Culture and Communication.
Aims and Objectives
The aim of the Joint Postgraduate Studies Program in Semiotics, Culture and Communication is:
- to investigate of phenomena of modern culture, at a theoretical and an applied level, from literature, advertising, audiovisual media, art, cultural heritage, to language, ideology, education, digital culture, popular culture and cultural adaptation,
- to highlight the analytical and interpretive possibilities of semiotics in the study of culture in all its diversity, complexity and dynamism,
- to respond to the needs of the market in the field of communication and culture.
The 1,5-year program of study offers a mix of mandatory and optional courses that involve:
- The study of communication and media.
- The study of ideology, cultural and social identities.
- The search for meaning in different types and tropes of text (literary, political, visual, audiovisual, advertising, artistic) and media (oral, typographic, photographic, filmic, digital)
- Research in modern communication techniques and strategies.
- Creating awareness about intercultural communication in educational practice.
- Discussing the theoretical and practical aspects of multimodality, intercultural translation, cultural adaptation and audiovisual communication.
- Understanding the position of Semiotics within the Human and Social Sciences.
- Understanding Semiotics as an interdisciplinary field.
- Understanding different models of semiotic analysis of cultural practices.
Requirements and duration
The requirements of the Joint Postgraduate Studies Program in Semiotics, Culture and Communication follow the highest international academic standards. They are fulfilled when students:
- fully attend two semesters of taught postgraduate courses and pass the semester exams with a written assignment in all units
- submit a final Diploma Thesis and pass the final presentation exam.
The duration of studies is a minimum of three (3) academic semesters or a maximum of six (6). The expected duration of studies is three (3) semesters, while half-time students can complete the course over 5 (five) to 6 (six) semesters.
The language of instruction is Greek. To obtain a master’s degree in Semiotics, Culture and Communication, postgraduate students must collect 90 (ninety) ECSTs divided into 8 courses and a Master’s Thesis (Diploma Thesis).
Evaluation
The program’s Quality Index according to our students’ evaluation is 89.85/100 (academic year 2019-20).
